Let's
face it people. Criterion is churning out more new updates than Spore's
Creature Creator has been churning out penis monsters. With the new and
long awaited Cagney update available for the Xbox 360 and PS3, the
upcoming Davis update in August, and the Eastwood update in the Fall as
well as talk about another update offering planes in Paradise City -
one question has come to mind.
Do we really need another Burnout?
Criterion
has taken a chance and succeed with their "Massive" updates that makes
Grand Theft Auto IV's "Episodic Content" look like Oblivion's ever so
useless Horse armor. Adding several gameplay additions like new
gametypes to motorcycles, outer islands, and maybe even planes.
It seems like they gotten things down good enough where they don't even
need to release a Burnout 6. There hasn't even been much talk,
speculation or even rumors on a Burnout 6.
These upcoming updates are surely promising as well. They can turn a
game from a simple car crashing arcade game into a huge expansive game
with the addition of motorcycles, a night/day cycle, a new island, and
possibly planes. Transforming Paradise into a game that can reach more
players of other genres: like the flight sim crowd.
Another important question comes to mind as well. If Criterion can
continuously update their game to add more aspects to it's gameplay:
Why doesn't any other company do the same? Sports games are Subject A.
It seems like every year gamers (And myself) are spending $60 every
year on sports games that often nothing more then ti's predecessor but
an updated roster. Hence the fact that EA publishes the Burnout games.
This update ordeal surely pleases the gamers though. Where instead of
having to shell out 60 bucks every year or so on a slightly improved
sequel; gamers only have the option to spend $10 (sometimes nothing) on
an update that can extend the life of the game for another 3 months.
And since they seem to release a new update every 4 months or so, they
can really make Burnout Paradise last for a lot longer then most games
of the same genre.
However, a sequel can always bring even more new features to the table
that no updates or downloadable content can ever top, in turn making
the developers some much appreciated bank.
But what is the reason behind all this downloadable content? Are they
creating these updates to put off making the next sequel? Or are these
"Updates" a clever scheme from Criterion?
Nevertheless, no other game has been backed up by downloadable content
like Burnout Paradise - excluding Money..er.. Microsoft's 50 Million
dollar deal to get some exclusive GTA:IV DLC in the Fall. And it seems
like Criterion doesn't plan to stop making updates for Paradise City
and it's ambitious drivers. So take it or leave it, Burnout Paradise's
frequent major updates are definitely a big hit and a great idea from
Criterion Games.
