It’s been nearly a decade since Microsoft decided to enter the
consoles market. Though the original Xbox got a cold reception, its
successor, the Xbox 360 has done pretty well. But it seems that
Microsoft is working on a lot of new things when it comes to video
games.
Chris Satchell from Microsoft has indicated that his company has experimented with three dimensional or stereoscopic games.
He mentioned that they though they found the technology extremely
interesting, but they felt that the requirement to wear headgear would
hamper the widespread acceptance.
Chris Satchell is the general manager of XNA. He told GamesIndustry.biz and explained, “This is a very interesting area of graphics technology. We have done experiments with this at Microsoft and the results are extremely interesting. However, the current systems that work well require wearing active shutter glasses and I think it is hard to be mainstream with asking people to wear headgear to play games.”
This is not the first time that a major company has spoken about 3D games. Some time ago, Yves Guillemot, the chief executive officer of Ubisoft had mentioned that they were working on three dimensional games, one of which was Avatar, the forthcoming 3D movie from James Cameron.
