Two years ago, the Grand Theft Auto Hot Coffee scandal had boiled into a big controversy with politicians and parents up in arms against Take-Two. But later it cooled down a little bit! Now NY Times is reporting that only 2676 people made a claim for the compensation over the hidden sexual content in
Seth R. Lesser is the lead lawyer for the plaintiffs. He remarked, “Am I disappointed? Sure. We can’t guess as to why now, several years later, people care or don’t care. The merits of the case were clear.” The suit against Take-Two and Rockstar Games would let users who bought GTA San Andreas claim between $5 and $35. But the measly number has disappointed most of the lawyers who were involved in it.
Theodore H. Frank is the director at the Legal Center for the Public Interest at the American Enterprise Institute. He explains, “There are two possibilities. Possibility one is they have a meritorious lawsuit and they’re selling out the class for attorneys’ fees. The other possibility is that, and frankly I think this is the more likely possibility, they brought a meritless lawsuit that had no business being brought to court at all.”
Take-Two will now be shelling out nearly $30,000 for the compensation to the consumers. However the video gaming company has agreed to donate some $860,000 to charity. But the eleven law firms who launched the suit are demanding $1.3 million in fees.
